In 2012, a museum called Humberghaus (named after the Humberg family) was opened in the former home of my mother’s grandparents in a small town in Germany.
Through this special project, we learned intricate details of my mother’s parents’ escape from Germany around the time of her birth, just one week after Kristallnacht. We learned how integrated the Humberg family had been in their community, despite being the only Jewish family in town. We met with many local families who had helped the Humberg family in their greatest time of need, and learned about the lives of the 10 Humberg family members who perished in concentration camps
